Dentures and the Canadian Dental Care Plan

The Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) is a federal program that helps pay for dental care, including dentures, for people without dental insurance. We accept the CDCP at our clinic. Here’s a short guide to how it works for denture patients.

Who qualifies

The CDCP is now open to Canadian residents of any age. You qualify if all four of these are true:

  1. You have no access to dental insurance, for example through work, a pension or a family member’s plan. Having access counts even if you don’t use it.
  2. You, and your spouse or partner if you have one, filed a tax return for last year.
  3. Your adjusted family net income is under $90,000.
  4. You are a Canadian resident for tax purposes.

What it covers for dentures

  • Complete dentures: one per jaw every 8 years.
  • Partial dentures: acrylic every 5 years, cast metal every 8 years. The first partial needs approval from the plan before it is made.
  • Immediate dentures, for when teeth are being removed.
  • Relines and rebases: once every 2 years per jaw.
  • Repairs: once a year per jaw.

Adjustments in the first three months after you receive a new denture are included. Implant-retained dentures are not covered.

About partial dentures. To approve a partial denture, the plan asks for recent x-rays of your teeth. Denturists in Ontario can’t take x-rays yet, so you may need to get them from your dentist. We’ll tell you exactly what’s needed.

How much you pay

Depending on your adjusted family net income, you may pay a share of the CDCP fee:

Family income Your co-payment
Under $70,000 none
$70,000 – $79,999 40%
$80,000 – $89,999 60%

If a fee is higher than the CDCP pays, or a service isn’t covered, there can be an additional charge. Before any treatment, we explain which parts are covered and what, if anything, you’ll pay, so there are no surprises. We bill the plan directly, so you don’t pay the full cost upfront.

How to apply

Apply online at canada.ca/dental or by phone at 1-833-537-4342. Applying is free. After you’re approved, you get a letter with your member ID, your coverage start date and your co-payment level, followed by a Sun Life member card. Care is covered only from your start date.

The plan has to be renewed every year. If you miss renewal, you have to apply again, and care during the gap isn’t covered.

Using your CDCP at our clinic

Bring your member card or the letter with your member ID and a piece of ID to your consultation. We check your coverage, explain your options and send any approval requests to the plan for you.

Seniors: if you’re 65 or older with a low income, you may also qualify for the Ontario Seniors Dental Care Program. You can be in both, but each service is paid by one program, so ask us which works better for you.
